It slides down into the hopper from the top a nice snug fit. A great way to preserve the top part of the hopper from the high temps combined with moisture from wet or damp charcoal that can make steam and blister the paint inside the hopper on older models. On the new models it still is nice because you dont have to worry about damaging the ceramic coating when scraping out the creosote also its easy to removal and take it to the trash can and scrape out the creosote buildup.
This is 14" tall it covers only the hopper area it DOES NOT extend down into the bottom 10" which is the firebox area you need the firebox mod for that.
There is a slight chance of warping but it is about 6" above the highest heat and after 20ish cooks during testing it hasnt warped at all.
